Statement in response to Englewood Herald

Rick Somerson | Candidate for Englewood City Council D1 | February 25, 2026

I appreciate the questions regarding my most recent campaign finance disclosure report. The focus of my campaign is to meet our neighbors, listen to their feedback, and bring new voices to civic engagement. This special election will already cost the taxpayers of Englewood approximately $40,000, and I didn’t want to ask our neighbors for even more money.

Instead, to kick off my campaign and purchase the yard signs, stickers, and online tools I needed, I asked close friends and family to help by making a contribution. I have built strong relationships over decades, and I am grateful to everyone who chose to make a donation in recognition of my ability to serve the people of Englewood. The list of donations I received includes my parents, my siblings, my cousins, my aunts and uncles, my college friends, and even my 5th grade teacher.

The report submitted on Feb. 5, 2026, was an accurate, thorough, and timely account of all revenues and expenses incurred before the filing date. I will continue to be fully transparent in my financial reporting and look forward to getting out there and meeting even more residents and businesses in District 1 as I bring new and diverse voices into making Englewood the best place to live, work, and play.

Statement in support of City Council Passing Resolution
No. 6

Rick Somerson | Candidate for Englewood City Council D1 | February 18, 2026

I applaud Mayor Sierra and City Council Members Prange, Anderson, Bethel, and Ward for their passage of a resolution reaffirming the City of Englewood’s commitment to best practices in law enforcement and requiring federal law enforcement to meet their constitutional obligations.

I appreciate the effort to explore all options and do everything in our power to keep all of our Englewood communities safe and maintain public trust. I share Mayor Sierra, Council Member Prange, and Council Member Ward’s desire to see these measures strengthened further.

I thank the members of the community who came forward to support this resolution and asked for a strengthened commitment to protecting our vulnerable communities.

When elected, I look forward to immediately collaborating with the Mayor and the rest of Council to strengthen protections under state and federal law and to ensure our policies, including those that protect our personal data, are robust and responsive to the needs of constituents in District 1 and all Englewood residents.

Meet Englewood District 1 candidate Rick Somerson

Lillian Fuglei | Englewood Herald | February 13, 2026

Although it’s still winter, Englewood is gearing up for election season this spring. The District 1 city council seat is currently vacant, and Rick Somerson is hoping to take the spot at the dais.

Somerson, who is running against Matt Crabtree, was one of the people who applied to fill the vacancy through appointment in December. While he was able to garner support with four votes, he wasn’t able to hit the supermajority of five votes required for appointment.

Now, Somerson is running in the special election that will fill the District 1 seat. He said that when he first applied, he knew he was in for the whole process, even if that meant an election.

Englewood City Council Vacancy to be filled with special election

Council failed to reach supermajority vote to appoint applicant

Lillian Fuglei | Englewood Herald | December 22, 2025

Englewood’s District 1 voters will soon get a chance to choose their next representative, after city council failed to reach a consensus and appoint an applicant for the vacant seat.

On Dec. 15, during an Englewood City Council meeting, council attempted to fill the District 1 vacancy on council, left by Othoniel Sierra’s election as mayor — the first direct mayoral election in over 70 years
